The Trump Administration to Issue Half Food Stamp Funds in November

The US government revealed it would offer limited relief to millions of nutritional assistance recipients as the continuing government shutdown neared a unprecedented length.

Benefit Decrease Information

Amid increasing uncertainty for the around 42 million people enrolled in the food assistance program, the USDA confirmed it would employ contingency money to maintain benefits, though at merely 50% of the regular allotment households usually receive.

Resources for the initiative formally ran out on recently due to the US government shutdown, now in its 34th consecutive day with no sign of ending.

Legal Proceedings

The announcement came in a judicial submission after previous refusals to release emergency funding on purported legal grounds. A court had determined the government could not withhold program funds due to the shutdown.

Subsequent to the judicial ruling, the president announced it would be "pleased" to supply emergency funding for the program.

Execution Hurdles

Authorities indicated that benefits could begin distribution by midweek, but highlighted the need for further clarification from the courts on how to legally reallocate resources for SNAP assistance.

  • Various authorities have indicated it will take days or even weeks to distribute benefits to vulnerable recipients.
  • Crowds have been reported at food banks around the nation.
  • In multiple regions, stadium areas were converted into assistance centers.

Local Crisis Measures

Several local governments, including New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced crisis measures to allocate short-term money for assistance. However, these amounts were projected to be a limited percentage of the regular national funding.

The national spending for SNAP reach approximately $8 billion each month throughout the United States.
