Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
